Medicare is an affordable form of healthcare for those 65 and older or those with certain underlying conditions. Although Medicare can help cover most of your medical costs, there are still out-of-pocket costs that may not be covered. This is where a Medicare supplement plan, also known as Medigap, can help. At E-Shop Medicare, your healthcare coverage is our priority, and a Medigap plan may be the right addition to your coverage.
What Is Medicare Supplement Coverage?
Medigap can help cut certain residual costs not covered by your Original Medicare, which is Part A and Part B. Rather than paying out of pocket, your Medigap plan can cover some of these costs, which works to supplement the costs you might have to pay for Original Medicare.
There are multiple Medigap Plans available. All will include different options and payment structures. However, they will generally cover the following items:
-
Certain services not covered by Original Medicare, like blood transfusions or skilled nursing
-
Copayments, coinsurance and deductibles from Medicare Part A and Part B
-
Emergency care needed during foreign travel
You must carry Original Medicare (Parts A and B) and live within a plan’s coverage area to enroll. Keep in mind supplemental plans do not offer Part D prescription coverage.
How Do I Qualify for a Medicare Supplement Plan?
To qualify for a supplemental plan, talk to your Medicare agent. As all plans differ, it’s crucial to choose the one that’s best for you. Your qualifications might depend on factors such as your age, health, location and financial status. Consider your individual coverage needs to decide which plan will benefit you.
When Can I Enroll In A Medicare Supplement Plan?
If qualified and have Medicare Part B, you can enroll in a Medigap plan up to six months after the first day of the month you turn 65. If you don’t have Part B, you’ll first have to enroll in that coverage. Once covered by Part B, you’ll have six months to get Medigap coverage.
