Dental & Vision Information

Your oral health and vision health are important components of your overall wellness. Still, receiving regular care might prove expensive. With targeted dental and vision insurance, you can get assistance paying for these services.

When you buy a health insurance plan, ask your agent if it includes dental and vision insurance. While some plans will, others won’t unless you ask for it.

Understanding Dental and Vision Insurance Options

Most health insurance doesn’t automatically cover standard dental care and vision exams. If you want covered care for things like cleanings, fillings, vision tests or lens fittings, you’ll likely need separate insurance plans.

A dental insurance plan might cover:

  • Routine cleanings

  • Specialty work like fillings or root canals

  • Medically-necessary wisdom teeth removal

  • Crowns, bridges and other major procedures

  • Certain orthodontics care, like braces

Vision plans can include services for:

  • Eye exams

  • Prescription eyewear (glasses) and contact lenses

  • Elective vision surgery (LASIK)

You understand how much these services help you live a healthier life. Therefore, investing in two extra plans might prove worthwhile, particularly if you need this care frequently.

How to Get Covered

If you already have a health insurance plan, you can generally start there when looking for dental and vision coverage. However, other options do exist.

  • Many health plans cover medically-necessary procedures like oral/maxillofacial surgeries, ophthalmic surgery and similar services. If you need that level of care, check your standard health insurance first.

  • You can often tack on separate dental and vision plans to your health insurance. For a slight increase in your premium, you’ll essentially add the coverage to your existing plan. That way, you won’t have to juggle multiple policies.

  • You can often buy vision or dental plans as stand-alone packages. You might find this path beneficial based on cost and service offerings.

  • If you buy a health plan from the federal insurance marketplace, all plans will include vision coverage for children. Some will include coverage for adults as well. You cannot buy a stand-alone vision plan on the marketplace.

  • Marketplace plans will also include dental coverage for children. Unlike with vision coverage, you sometimes can buy a dental plan separately on the market.

Depending on the coverage you select, you’ll pay a different premium and deductible. You’ll also likely see different covered services on most plans. Therefore, when deciding on a dental or vision plan, talk to your insurance agent, and take a close look at your personal needs. The appropriate research can help you determine the appropriate amount of coverage.
